The debate on why African Americans should go to HBCU was
very informational and inspiring. As an African American of course this option came
to mind. As we can clearly tell I didn’t go down that route. After going to
this debate I could honestly say that I found closer on my decision. The West
Georgia debate teammates made it very clear to me that I did make the right decision
on not going. The Clark Atlanta and Spellman did make an argument but it was
convincing at all. Some of the points that were brought up were the fact that
in HBCU’s African American students gets to learn more about where they come
from. The HBCU team mates argued that all African Americans should know the
background in depth and that’s why HBCU have required classes that everyone
should take. This is one of the things that I felt un-different about I feel
that it is true us as African Americans
should know our background but for us to be forced to make that option isn’t something
that I agree with. The West Ga team also brought up the fact that we do have African
American history as a class here at the university which I wasn’t aware
of. The fact that it is taught here is a
plus to all African Americans that decided that they didn’t want to attend an
HBCU. The biggest points that caught my attention was the argument of how there
is a bigger percent that African American students that go to HBCU end up with
a much bigger debt than ones that dont attend one. The cost of going to a well-known
HBCU is great deal of a difference in price than one that isn’t. The fact that
most African Americans come from low income family doesn’t benefit us at all. The
other topic that I couldn’t really get a grasp on was the fact that almost all
HBCU are placed in low income communities. The argument that was made is that
students can help out the community and other African Americans. In my opinion it’s
like putting a child in front of a candy store but not giving the child any
money. I’m not saying all African Americans are poor but the price of college
is expensive anywhere. Why do us African American have to pay more to stick
together?
